The Atonement
The Causes of Atonement
- “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. — John 3:16
- But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8
- But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us — 2:4
- whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed—Romans 3:25
- for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. —Romans 3:26
The Cost of Atonement
- For the wages of sin is death—Romans 6:23a
- In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.—1 John 4:10
- “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”—Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34
- Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”— Luke 23:46
The Coverage of Atonement
- Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.—John 19:30
- Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.—Romans 8:1
