You Follow Me

You Follow Me

In Absolution Jesus Demands no Apology

  • Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord.13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and the fish likewise.—Verse 12-13

In Affection Jesus Demands Sincerity

  • So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” —Verses 15
  • He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.”He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.—Verses 16-17

In Devotion Jesus Demands Consistency

  • Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!—verses 20-22

The Invited Host

Luke 24:13-31

Knowing but not Perceiving

  • And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.—vv 13-14

Believing but not Expecting

  • And He said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26“Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”—vv 25-26

Expecting but not Intruding

  • When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.—vv 30-31

The Atonement

The Causes of Atonement

  • “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. — John 3:16
  • But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8
  • But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us — 2:4
  • whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed—Romans 3:25
  • for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. —Romans 3:26

The Cost of Atonement

  • For the wages of sin is death—Romans 6:23a
  • In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.—1 John 4:10
  • “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”—Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34
  • Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”— Luke 23:46

The Coverage of Atonement

  • Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.—John 19:30
  • Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.—Romans 8:1

God in Flesh

John 1:14

Experienced Serious Disregard

  • This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. . . So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.—Luke 2:12, 16
  • and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. But His parents were unaware of it, 44but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and went a day’s journey; and they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances.—Luke 2:43-44
  • And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”. . . And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; 29and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.—Luke 4:22, 28-29

Experienced Stern Disrespect

  • But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”.—Luke 23:18
  • Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, 68and said, “Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?”—Matthew 26:67-68
  • “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38Now there was also an inscription above Him, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”—Luke 23:37-38
  • And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”—Luke 23:35
